According to official announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced that Kevin Muhlendorf will officially become the new Inspector General of the agency on July 28. Mr. Muhlendorf has previously served as a lawyer at the SEC and the Department of Justice. Over the past nine years, he has been a partner at the Washington, D.C. law firm Wiley Rein LLP, focusing on representing individuals and entities in white-collar criminal defense and government investigation matters in criminal and civil securities enforcement cases. Acting Inspector General Katherine Reilly will return to the position of Deputy Inspector General.
During his private practice, Mr. Muhlendorf has frequently led sensitive internal investigations and provided compliance advice to clients. From 2023 to 2024, he was seconded to Wiley Rein, serving as the Acting Inspector General of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), leading over thirty auditors and special investigators in conducting investigations and issuing financial and performance audit reports. He also designed and implemented a whistleblower reward pilot program.
