According to Reuters, Tesla's Robotaxi service began public trial operation yesterday in the South Congress Avenue area of Austin, Texas, with 10 Model Y vehicles initially deployed. The driver's seat remains empty but is equipped with a remote safety officer in the background. Although the safety officer does not have traditional driving controls, they can intervene in the vehicle when necessary through devices like emergency stop buttons. The vehicles also have biometric sensors to monitor passengers' health in real-time and automatically alert in case of emergencies. The trial operation is limited to invited users in a strictly restricted service area, with a fixed fare of $4.2 per trip.
The Robotaxi in testing uses a pure vision solution, relying solely on an 8-camera system. Musk stated in a tweet that the pure vision solution costs less than a third of competitors. This achievement comes after a decade of effort, with Tesla's AI chip and software team entirely self-developed. It is reported that the valuation of Tesla's autonomous driving business accounts for over 60% of its trillion-dollar market value.
