According to Kyodo News, Japanese Minister of Economic Revitalization Taro Aso met with US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Lighthizer in Washington on the 27th local time. The seventh round of ministerial-level negotiations between Japan and the US is focused on the high tariff policies of the Trump administration. The Japanese government stated, "Productive discussions were held. We will continue to coordinate fully between Japan and the US to reach an agreement beneficial to both sides." Taro Aso did not immediately speak to the media after the negotiations. The meeting between the two lasted about 1 hour. Considering the temporary suspension of the deadline for additional tariffs until July 9, and Japan's Upper House election vote counting on the 20th, Aso requested a significant reduction in the tariff rate for automobiles, which the Japanese government considers a "national interest."
