Jim is one of many Chinese-Americans who live in Warren, Greenbrook, Watchung and Long Hill, N.J. that have decided to take a stand against coronavirus (COVID‑19). These communities have managed to raise over $30,000 and have risked their health and safety in order to help protect the health care employees serving on the frontlines.

Laura Peng, a lead data architect from NanJing, China and wife of Jim Peng, said that when they saw how diligently health care employees were working to save lives, despite their lack of protection, they knew they had to do something to help them.

On March 17, Volunteers sent out donation instructions through popular Chinese social media app WeChat and were able to raise $31,000, which will go towards purchasing materials such as isolation gowns, eye protectors and medical masks for health care workers.

Connie Wu, a Rutgers University engineering and patient information specialist, said that their group of about 400 New Jersey-based Chinese-Americans were able to raise “more than $15,000 in just a few hours.”

Wu also noted that those who are interested in donating towards the fight against COVID-19 should reach out to conniewu1@yahoo.com.
