Coinbase may soon become the first U.S. cryptocurrency exchange to go public later this year as sources report the company is making plans for a stock market listing, as reported by Reuters.

If Coinbase's listing secures approval from the Securities and Exchange Commisssion it would be a huge step forward in moving the crypto world into the mainstream. It is unclear whether Coinbase will launch an initial public offering or will simply allow existing shares to be traded.

Coinbase is a leading crypto exchange with 35 million users and was valued at $8 billion in its most recent private funding round in 2018.
