Former Coinbase user and Bitcoin researcher Jim Harper sued Internal revenue Service (IRS) for violating his privacy, particularly seizing private financial information, as reported by Coindesk.

In the summer of 2019, Harper received a letter from IRS claiming he hadn’t paid taxes on crypto. More than ten thousand taxpayers receive a soft letter as well. Harper assumes IRS’s information is unlawfully seized from Coinbase in 2018.

“If they acquired it via the Coinbase summons – and we don't know that for sure – it was a defective process that denied me the opportunity to contest the seizure of my data,” Harper told Coindesk. His lawyer notes that Harper’s case could be an opportunity to restrict the power of the administrative state.
