A recent release from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) states that the agency is looking for ways to monitor illicit transactions involving cryptocurrencies after noting an increase in drug-related investigations involving navy members over this past year.

The release stated that an increasing number of navy personnel are using the darknet and services like TOR — which obscures IP addresses to provide anonymity — to buy drugs using cryptocurrencies.

In response, law enforcement is evolving their technologies to discover and trace buyers and sellers on darknet marketplaces. The NCIS has issued a warning to personnel that federal, state, and local law enforcement are working together to trace darknet purchases.

Earlier this year the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration looked into buying blockchain analytics software from Coinbase to trace potentially criminal transactions, another indicator that law enforcement is developing new strategies to curb illegal behavior involving blockchain or cryptocurrencies.
