Ethereum 2.0 developers announced the first testnet to be deployed by the Ethereum Foundation on Wednesday, July 22.

The testnet will be live on August 4 and has been named Medalla. The launch of the new "official" testnet signals that the codebase is almost ready to host Ethereum 2.0 which is slated for release by the end of 2020.  

Fork coordinator Afri Schoedon, who coordinates the group of developers working on Ethereum 2.0, plans for Medalla to be the final testnet before the mainnet launch he said in a Github statement Wednesday.
