J. Christopher Giancarlo, former chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), believes that the United States government should digitize the U.S. Dollar, in an attempt to take away power from central banks, according to his opinion piece from the Wall Street Journal.

Giancarlo believes that the dollar could lose its luster in the future, due to other countries creating their own digital currencies. Giancarlo proposed a government sanctioned blockchain protocol, created and managed by a “independent nongovernmental group,” that could be run by “banks and other trusted payment organizations.”
