Announced Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor’s office has demanded a criminal trial against Alexander Vinnik—the alleged Russian operator of BTC-e, as reported by L’Express. 

The public prosecutor accused the chief of BTC-e of extortion, money laundering, conspiracy, and harming automatic data-processing systems, while BTC-e was forced to close in 2017. Crystal Blockchain’s data suggests that approximately $7 billion worth of bitcoin (733,000 BTC) were involved in the platform. 

Vinnik was arrested in Greece in July 2017 and handed over to French judicial authorities last January. It is now up to the investigating judges to decide whether or not to refer him to court. 

Vinnik persisted that he is innocent of charges.
