Hackers have been making clones of legitimate WordPress plugins for nefarious reasons for a while now, but it was recently discovered by the security company Sucuri that hackers were using this technology to access servers. The hackers gain access to the servers through malicious code, this code allows hackers to use your servers to mine for Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency.

One of the dangers is that even after the infected code is removed the hacker could still have access to your servers through a backdoor functionality still being present. This technique doesn’t take much skill either, hackers merely modify the code of existing plugins, then they just generate a name for the plugin and lace it with an arbitrary payload.
