Twitter believes attackers preyed certain Twitter employees through a social engineering scheme, which is the intentional manipulation of people into performing certain actions and disclosing confidential information.
Specifically, the attack can be categorized as a “phone spear phishing attack”, in which attackers manipulated a small number of employees and exploited their credentials to access Twitter’s internal system.
