South Korean city Seongnam has plans to expand its blockchain-based payment program by offering digital gift certificates, as reported by local outlet Kyunghyang Shinmun.

The expansion will be dependent on an app called Chak app which will help people to utilize the three gift certificate types — serving as cash, check or mobile cards — which can be used at 45,000 mercants across the city.

The city hopes the app and blockchain payment system will help reduce contact during transactions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
