The heightened gas price comes as Ethereum users are eager for the release of Ethereum 2.0 which will transition the network to a proof-of-stake instead of proof-of-work system. Ethereum developers and users have long been concerned over congestion on the network, reflected by high gas prices.
It is unclear why the price of gas has spiked so significantly over the past day.
