NASA has ordered a blockchain-based communications system from two tech companies with plans for the design to be implemented in the agency's quadcopter fleet, according to the proposal summary.

Orbit Logic and the Fraunhofer USA Center for Experimental Software Engineering won $124,800 in NASA funding on Tuesday, August 25 to build the technology. The system proposed by the two companies will leverage blockchain technology to store and distribute satellite data enabling a network for collaboration among satellites to improve communication and efficacy.

Communications will be kept live in the event of breakdowns because if one node cuts out the others will cover for it. The project description highlighted that quadcopters need to stay connected and nimble when navigating through tedious environments and that blockchain could help them to do that.
