Heath Tarbet, chairman of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), has asked for “principles-based regulation” for cryptocurrencies.

Tarbert said that this method would allow for a period of growth and surveillance before adopting more targeted rules. The chairman stressed that this approach wouldn’t necessarily imply a light-touch approach, but would instead move way from detailed rules to instead depend on high-level and “broadly-stated principles” to create the basis for regulated firms and products.
