Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), discussed central bank digital currencies (CBDC) at her first hearing of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs of the European Parliament as ECB President.

Lagarde stated that a CBDC would allow citizens to use central bank money immediately and daily. However, Lagarde does feel that there is an inherent risk with utilizing a CBDC. CBDC’s can possibly alter the way that monetary policy is conducted and transmitted to the real economy. Lagarde also worries that a CBDC could carry implications for the functioning of the global financial system and its stability.
