A Polkadot community member asked a question, "Is there a set date for the parachain auctions to begin? Or have they already started?" On Sept. 23, Polkadot founder Gavin Wood said in response, "Parachain auctions will begin on Kusama prior to Polkadot. It makes little sense for them to begin until we are ready to actually host parachains on Kusama/Polkadot."
He continues, "There are a number of blockers: 1. the parachains code should be upgraded from the v0 in Rococo to the v1, which needs a few weeks out; 2. cumulus should also be upgraded to work with parachains v1, xcmplite and be stabilized; 3. parachains final security should be fully implemented and audited; 4. the auction pallet should be audited."
