Deepfakes are videos generated with help from artificial intelligence that can show recognizable figures (like Barack Obama or Mark Zuckerberg, for example) in a realistic looking video saying things that they have never said or never would say. There is an enormous amount of potential for trouble that could come from the deepfaking of prominent and powerful people.

Blockchain was named in a 72-page report from Witness Media Lab as one of the tools that stands a chance to push back against the threat of deepfakes. Blockchain is able to verify source media copycats or outright manipulations the same way it verifies crypto transactions, making it an ideal fix to this problem.

However, blockchains are still vulnerable to complex attacks against their governance structures, or the notorious 51% attacks that have been a thorn in the side of the crypto community in the past.
