Spain's central bank is moving forward with research into designing a digital currency and the economic implications of issuing one, according to a new strategic plan released on Friday, October 16.
Central bank digital currency researchers will evaluate various design proposals and analyze risks associated with issuing a CBDC. The report will also look into how digital identification plays into a CBDC, hinting at concerns that a digital currency would eliminate the ability for citizens to transact anonymously.
Priority research will begin now and extend through 2021. The Bank of Spain cannot move forward with issuing a CBDC without going through the European Central Bank as a member of the eurozone. However, earlier this summer, the European Central Bank announced it is researching a digital euro.
