The head of Russia's central bank Elvira Nabiullina announced on October 23 that a pilot version of the digital ruble could be ready by 2021, as reported by TASS news agency.

While Russia is strict when it comes to regulating Bitcoin, the nation's central bank issued a report earlier this month stating that a digital currency would make payments faster, simpler and safer. Nabiullina stated during the conference that the digital ruble was "quite real" and that it would be tested with a small number of users before 2021.

Nabiullina noted that a CBDC would not ensure anonymity, like cash, but that confidentiality would be strengthened.
