Crypto derivatives are now at least 4.6 times the volume of spot trade and this trend may continue, according to a report from Kraken. Compared with spot trade volume, derivatives trading volume has increased significantly. From the second quarter of 2017 to the first quarter of 2018, spot trade volumes rose sharply from a low of about $58 billion to a high of $570 billion, and then fell sharply to a low of $104 billion nearly two years later. Since then, derivatives have completely replaced the spot market as the dominant market, and spot trade volume has not fully recovered. The volume of crypto derivatives surged from less than $6 billion in the second quarter of 2017 to more than $1.7 trillion in the third quarter of 2020.
