European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde indicated that the bank may issue a digital currency within the next few years during a virtual panel discussion on Thursday hosted by the European Central Bank.

She added that if a digital currency offers a cheaper, faster, more secure options for consumers then the bank should explore the option. Additionally, if a digital currency could contribute to a better monetary sovereignty and a better autonomy for the euro area then it is worth exploring. She stated her hunch is that a central bank digital currency for the euro zone will come.

However, the project would take two to four years while researchers ironed out privacy, money laundering and technology concerns.
