Because of a ransomware attack on a Canadian insurance company the United Kingdom High Court ordered a proprietary injunction on Bitcoin (BTC). A proprietary injunction prevents a person from dealing with assets in which the claimant has a proprietary interest.

The UK High Court published documents regarding a ransomware attack, that left over 1,000 of the insurance company’s computers unusable because of malware that encrypted files, making them inaccessible. The perpetrators of the attack demanded $1.2 million in Bitcoin in exchange for decrypting the data.

The firm’s insurance covered the losses from cybercrime and agreed to pay the hackers $950,000 in Bitcoin to decrypt the files, the hackers sent a tool to unlock the computers 24 hours after the payment.
