Despite being called the greatest cybersecurity threat at the beginning of last year, crypto malware-related hacks (cryptojacking) fell 78% in the second half of 2019.

According to a report from cyber threat intelligence agency SonicWall, cryptojacking fell due to “the price of bitcoin and complementary currencies created an untenable situation.” However, this doesn’t seem to be true, as 2018 proved to be a tough year for Bitcoin as well, yet cryptojacking numbers were still up. The cryptojacking dropoff is more likely due to greater measures being taken against cryptojacking. One example is Interpol’s recent highly coordinated campaign to disinfect more than 20,000 MikroTik routers, reducing illicit crypto mining by 78% across Southeast Asia.
