Brink, the Bitcoin open source development community established today, announced that Square Crypto, the Human Rights Foundation, and Gemini will provide financial support for community researchers. In addition, the crypto exchange Kraken is providing its first $150,000 grant.

What makes Brink different from other non-profit organizations is that its funding comes from direct donations from the public. Brink’s press release says it is the first Bitcoin organization in the U.S. to apply for the charitable 501(c)(3) designation, by doing so the taxpayers can make tax-free donations to developers funded by Brink.
