Coinbase has joined Square, Inc as a founding board member of the Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), according to a recent announcement.

COPA already holds big names in the crypto industry including Satoshi Labs, Kraken, Blockstream and 15 others. Payments platform Square launched COPA in September with the goal of addressing concerns surrounding a "patent lockup" of foundational cryptocurrency technologies by a small pool of parties that will stifle mass adoption.

COPA seeks to make foundational technology on cryptocurrency available for everyone to freely use and tackles the patent lockup concern. COPA members pledge to not use their patents against anybody, except defensively. COPA also creates a shared patent library where members pool their crypto patents and share ideas.
