On June 19 The New York Times reported that the city council of Riviera Beach, Florida has agreed to pay almost $600,000 worth of Bitcoin (BTC) in order to regain access to data encrypted in a hacker attack.

The attack occurred on May 29 when a police department employee opened an infected email attachment, resulting in the breakdown of the online system. The hackers were able to encrypt government records, blocking access to valuable information and leaving the city without the ability to accept utility payments online.
