The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is set to decide whether to approve or reject bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), as Wilshire Phoenix’s United States Bitcoin and Treasury Investment Trust meets a filing deadline Wednesday.

Wilshire Phoenix becomes just the latest in a long list of companies looking to secure SEC approval to list shares of a bitcoin-related ETF and is currently the only company with an active application before the securities regulator. This instrument permits retail investors to recieive exposure to the bitcoin market without having to actually own bitcoin itself, possibly increasing market participation by individuals wary of bitcoin’s stance as an unregulated investment.
