The Serbian government will now permit the issuance and trading of digital assets and related services under a law that went into effect Dec. 29, a change from the previous laws prohibiting digital asset services.

The “Digital Asset Law” officially went into effect Tuesday. Digitial assets can now be issued in Serbia with or without an approved whitepaper, though an asset without approval is not allowed to advertise.

Digital asset exchanges are allowed, but will need licenses to operate, according to the new law. Secondary trading of digital assets issued in Serbia, over-the-counter (OTC) trading and use of smart contracts in secondary trading are also allowed.
