Sergio Kurczyn, a senior economist at Citigroup subsidiary CitiBanamex, said in an interview that the Central Bank of Mexico could be driven to issue a central bank digital currency (CBDC). He claimed that if Bexico, which has thus far remained relatively silent on the subject of CBDCs, might be sparked into action if part of the Mexican payment system were “invaded”. Kurczyn has also prepared a report on the matter of CBDC issuance in Mexico, and said that it was likely that a digital version of the peso would roll out in the “medium or long term.”
