The Digital Currency Initiative (DCI), which was operated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s Media Lab, today announced that it has connected with many industry leaders and received $4 million in charitable donations. 

These donations will be used to develop a new Bitcoin software and security effort, including hire open source developers and researchers, and focus on long-term strategies across the entire ecosystem to strengthen the basic Bitcoin protocol. 

The program was backed by many well-known industry figures, including Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, MicroStrategy founder Michael Saylor, CoinShares, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, etc.
