The hacker attack shut down most of Ireland’s health care IT systems, leaving doctors unable to access patient records and patients unsure whether they should attend appointments. However, Ireland refused to pay the hackers bitcoin ransom. Paul Reid, chief executive of the Irish Health Service, said on the radio that the decision to shut down the system was a "preventive" measure.
