According to a report from Coindesk, the active nodes of The Bitcoin Lightning Network, a layer 2 payment service built on the Bitcoin blockchain, exceeded 25,000 for the first time.

In the past 30 days, the number of active nodes has increased by 8% to 25,010.

A node is essentially a "user" on the network. By setting up its own computer to interact with other nodes, it can send, verify, and receive onchain information.

However, not every node runs a channel. Currently, the number of nodes with channels is 14,419, accounting for about 58% of all nodes, the remaining 42% is just to verify transactions and provide security for the Bitcoin network.
