On December 20, Elad Roisman, the republican Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced that he would step down at the end of January 2022.

Roisman was appointed by former President Trump and was sworn in in September 2018. "Serving the American people as a Commissioner and an Acting Chairman of this agency has been the greatest privilege of my professional life. It has been the utmost honor to work alongside my extraordinary SEC colleagues, who care deeply about investors and our markets," he said in the resignation statement.

Roisman's departure means that Hester Peirce, who is affectionately called the "crypto mom", will become the only serving Republican SEC commissioner.

Earlier in December, Roisman and Hester Peirce issued a joint statement criticizing SEC Chairman Gary Gensler for failing to establish clear rules that allow investors and regulated entities to safely interact with cryptocurrencies. In July, Roisman and Peirce publicly opposed enforcement actions against crypto company Blotics.
