Meta Files 8 Metaverse Trademark Applications

In a tweet early on Wednesday, metaverse trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis tweeted that Meta Platforms Inc., formerly Facebook, has filed 8 new trademark applications for its logo. The applications were filed on March 18, 2022 and forecast the company’s plans to dive into crypto and virtual assets and services such as cryptocurrencies, tokens, crypto trading, blockchain software, and cryptocurrency exchanges.

Since the rebranding from Facebook to Meta, CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has made his intention to expand the company's brand into the virtual world. Now we have more hard evidence for how the California-based heavyweight is planning to do so. 

While Meta is aiming to convince that world that social networking is the entry point to the metaverse, they are met with fierce opposition. Microsoft for example is taking a different approach through gaming, and after their $69 billion deal to buy Activision Blizzard, it is clear they are also ramping up their metaverse vision.

In addition, Microsoft will begin to implement their communication platform, Teams, into the metaverse. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, in their first earnings call of the year said, “Teams is going to have Mesh meetings, so these immersive meetings which will start on 2D screens whether it’s PCs or phones, and then lead up to immersive experiences where you’ll wear your AR or VR goggles.”

Other gaming companies entering the metaverse include Epic Games, Roblox Corporation and Sony. Other juggernaut’s fighting for users in the metaverse are Apple, Amazon, NVIDIA and Snapchat to name a few. 

Will the metaverse is still in its infancy, it is clear that all the major players in the world are preparing to make their claim in it.
