Reddit Appears to be Creating an NFT Marketplace

Reddit appears to be in the process of creating an NFT marketplace, after job listings at the company were posted in the career section of the website, advertising opportunities to become part of a new NFT platform. 

Reddit has posted job advertisements for managers and engineers to join its new team looking to “build the largest creator economy on the internet, powered by independent creators, digital goods, and NFTs.” The fundamental goal of the project is to “to empower Redditors and communities by giving them the ability to create and own digital goods.” 

Reddit gives credit to NFTs for being more than just digital art, they can also represent community status and identity. Being that the platform is a social news aggregation and discussion website, it makes sense that the California-based company is viewing NFTs as an extension of community. 

“We think they have an incredible power to create participation and belonging,” Reddit said. 

Reddit calls NFTs the “most explosive movement in the world of crypto,” noting that people can support their favorite artists, athletes, etc. by owning NFTs released by those individuals. They can also engage with the larger crypto community and the fans of the NFT collections they are fascinated with. 

The Massachusetts-founded company also mentions that while NFTs are primarily in the form of digital art, anything can be minted to be included on the blockchain, giving participants more access to things they are interested in and more entry points into niche communities. 

Reddit currently has 29 different job openings related to NFTs with the vast majority being either “senior backend engineer, NFT platform” or “senior IOS engineer, NFT platform.” The locations being advertised are located around the U.S. and abroad, including Berlin, London, Amsterdam and more.
