A Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT, allegedly stolen from famous singer Jay Chou, sold for 150 ETH ($520,000) on NFT trading platform LooksRare according to a Beosin investigation

In an instagram post, the famous singer said that NFT, BATC #3738 was stolen among other things in a phishing attack.

That attack coincided with a BAYC discord attack, which forced the discord to tweet about it on their official Twitter account.

“STAY SAFE. Do not mint anything from any Discord right now. A webhook in our Discord was briefly compromised. We caught it immediately but please know: we are not doing any April Fools stealth mints / airdrops etc. Other Discords are also being attacked right now.”

The Beosin analysis showed that Chou’s ape had gone through at least two buyers in the hours after the theft. The first sale to buyer one was for 124 WETH (wrapped Ethereum) and the second sale was for 155 WETH.

The hacker then used a popular crypto mixer, Tornado Cash, to make the ETH untraceable. Using smart contracts Tornado Cash accepts ETH and other tokens from one address and allows them to withdraw to a different address.

Here is an image from Beosin that sums up the process explained above:

Beosin, a leading global blockchain security brand, in addition to providing the detailed report of the transactions also gave Chou some advice for how he could proceed. First, they noted that the IP address they found was the CDN IP and that the real one could not be found. If Chou wants to find the hacker, the recommended the following:

“To track down the real identity information of the hacker, users can apply to investigate the information related to KYC credit card payment of the domain service provider, but this is not easy, and may require the assistance and support of relevant judicial procedures.”

Bored Apes are the most valuable collection by market cap, coming in just shy of 1.2 million ETH, according to CoinMarketCap.
