U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is set to give her first official speech on digital assets Thursday at American University in Washington, D.C. at 10:30 a.m. ET.
The speech comes as President Joe Biden signed an executive order in March of this year, calling for a “whole-of-government” approach in assessing the risks and benefits of cryptocurrency and other aspects of the digital world.
An early skeptic of the crypto movement, Yellen has since deviated from her initial stance noting that it could be used in positive ways in an interview with CNBC.
“There have been benefits from crypto and we recognize that innovation in the payment system can be a healthy thing,” Yellen said. “We would like to come out eventually with recommendations that will create a regulatory environment [for] innovation."
