On Tuesday, District Judge Kevin Castel of the Southern District of New York handed down a final verdict against former Ethereum developer Virgil Griffith.
The former contributor to the Ethereum Foundation was sentenced to 63 months in prison and paid a $100,000 fine, a sentence that fell short of the sentencing standard recommended by prosecutors.
Griffith's relatives and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin have jointly written a letter asking the court for leniency for Virgil Griffith's crimes, Vitalik Buterin described him as a kind and cooperative person.
In April 2019, Griffith delivered a speech on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, and was arrested in November of the same year. The United States accused Griffith of instigating North Koreans to evade sanctions, thereby violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act(IEEPA).
Griffith pleaded guilty to violating international sanctions last September and is currently being held at the MDC Brooklyn Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.
