Andre Cronje, arguable one of the most notorious and prolific developers in the decentralized finance (DeFi) industry, is bullish on the future of crypto calling for a new age despite his belief that “crypto culture has strangled crypto ethos” in a blog post he shared on Monday.

In Cronje’s new age of crypto he sees trust not trustlessness and greed leading the way. He envisions regulations that are designed to protect the unique technology and ethos behind crypto instead of regulations that restrict and bottleneck its capabilities.

He also yearns for the opportunity to be at the forefront of monetary policy. He feels that the mistakes the founding people made to monetary policy are the same ones that crypto is falling victim to. At the same time, he believes that crypto is the age of “we can do better.”

This statement might come as a surprise for many as he has long been vocal about his indignation with the crypto community.

“I have long been vocal on my disdain of crypto culture, and my love for crypto ethos. Reading that might sound weird, but crypto ethos is concept like self-sovereign rights, self custody, self empowerment. Crypto culture is concepts like wealth, entitlement, enrichment, and ego,” Cronje said in the blog.

Cronje believes in crypto like the American founding people believed in the bill of rights. He believes that crypto is more than just a type of technology, but he believes that it can unlock the potential to so much more. He believes that crypto has innate characteristics attached to it like self-sovereign rights, self custody and self empowerment.

This statement comes after Cronje and Fantom Foundation developer Anton Nell announced they would be closing the chapter of contributing to the defi/crypto space, which also meant the termination of 25 apps and services.

Cronje has had a rollercoaster ride relationship with crypto, leaving the space twice in 2020 before ultimately returning. He consistently cites the “toxic” culture as the reason for his departures, only to come back months later.

Cronje is best known for creating Yearn Finance, a crypto yield aggregator, and Keep3rV1, a decentralized keeper network. Yearn Finance’s native coin, YFI, currently trades at just over $18,000 with a market cap of just over $682 million.
