An Infura service fault has caused MetaMask, a crypto web wallet, to stop working for the majority of users, causing Ethereum gas fees to decrease substantially as a result.
“We are in the process of rolling out a fix and our core systems are starting to recover,” said Infura, an Ethereum infrastructure provider, in their last update. “Full service functionality will be reestablished as remaining components come back online.”
According to their status update page, Infura identified the problem around 9:43 a.m. ET and identified the problem 14 minutes after that. A couple hours later they said they were in the process of fixing the problem.
Infura is MetaMask’s default remote procedure call (RPC) provider, meaning Infura serves as an interface for MetaMask and others to interact with the blockchain.
As a result of the outage, Ethereum gas fees plummeted from 100 gwei ($6) to about 20 gwei for instant transactions according to data. At the time of writing instant transactions were at 60 gwei. It should be noted that this price fluctuates every few seconds.
Other RPC providers have not reported any outages at the time of writing.
