Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has submitted five trademark applications in the United States for a new digital platform coined Meta play, according to filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Mike Kondoudis, a licensed trademark attorney, also broke the news on twitter.

The filings submitted on May 13 described Meta Pay as an “online social networking service for investors allowing financial trades and exchange of digital currency, virtual currency, cryptocurrency, digital and blockchain assets, digital tokens, [and] crypto tokens.”

The social media giant previously acquired the MetaPay.com domain name from MetaBank for $60 million in December 2021. Now it’s much more clear what they have in store for that name and domain.

This is just Meta's latest venture related to crypto, as the CEO himself, Mark Zuckerberg, announced plans to begin to test NFTs on Instagram earlier this month. In addition to NFTs, at the time, Facebook tried to launch a stablecoin called Diem in early 2021. However, after facing regulatory opposition, the project eventually failed before getting off and running.
