A snapshot of the Bitcoin codebase is set to be encoded onto film reels and preserved under the arctic ice in Svalbard, Norway for a thousand years.

This move is part of the GitHub Archive Program, which looks to maintain open-source software, for future generations to learn about the culture of today.

In an attempt to ensure the long term preservation of its code, GitHub has partnered with Software Heritage Foundation, Arctic World Archive and Oxford University’s Bodleian Library.
