Dogecoin Surges as Musk/Tesla Accept it for Merchandise Purchases

Dogecoin (DOGE) surged close to 10% as Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX CEO, tweeted that customers can now buy Tesla merchandise using Dogecoin, with the same feature being added to SpaceX soon.

Originally Musk tweeted in January of this year that Tesla merchandise was purchasable using Dogecoin, but that only included a handful of items, like their belt buckles and children’s all-terrain vehicles. Now all merchandise will be on this list.

In addition, Tesla currently allows people to purchase their e-car using the memecoin. As it stands, DOGE is currently the only cryptocurrency Tesla accepts. It used to allow purchasers to buy their cars using Bitcoin, but in May 2021, that was scrapped as Musk deemed it too environmentally unfriendly. 

At the release of the news, Dogecoin instantly rose to almost 10% before coming back down. It currently sits at $0.0834, which is an almost 5% increase in the last 24 hours. Here is a live look at the DOGE chart in the last 24 hours:
