Metaverse-Building Platform Mona Raised $14.6M in Series A Funding Round

Mona, a metaverse-building platform, has raised $14.6 million in a series A funding round, led by Protocol Labs, Archetype VC and Collab+Currency, to bolster their platform designed especially for 3D digital creators, according to a press release. 

“We see creators and developers as the backbone for the metaverse,” CEO Justin Melillo said. “So we’re really excited to take a different position on things and move the conversation away from this emphasis placed on artificial scarcity, selling land, even selling passes for a creator to build.”

Mona is a “3D-world” building platform and social network for the metaverse. It allows creators to create their own metaverses or 3D worlds, have visitors access them and even mint them on Ethereum or Polygon as a non-fungible token (NFT). Every 3D environment is fully multiplayer, featuring voice chat, text chat, hyperlinking and token gated access. 

The unique thing about Mona is its limitlessness. Where other platforms benefit from speculation and land scarcity, Mona is opening up their platform in an unlimited way to all creators. 

“There is no end to virtual land. And so we just want to be able to support creators as best we can,” Melillo said. “I saw a lot of platforms capitalizing on speculation and land scarcity. And so that’s what really motivated me to want to start Mona, and really place the emphasis on the creator.”

The world-building platform is free for anyone who wants to take a crack at it. 

Here is one example of the types of worlds you can build using Mona. Fondation M created a virtual art gallery featuring more than 12 unique spaces and 15 artists. You can create your own avatar and roam the digital art gallery where you can see many different types of art, including paintings and sculptures.
