UK Appoints Matthew Long to Lead New Position as Director of Payments and Digital Assets

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) appointed Matthew Long, former director of the multi-agency National Economic Crime Command (NECC) as director of payments and digital assets, a new role overseeing the e-money, payment and crypto-asset markets and creating policy to navigate them, according to release on Tuesday.

Long is one of six newly appointed directors that will join over 500 new colleagues the FCA has recruited since the beginning of this year. 

The regulator’s search for a crypto head began in mid-March as pressure mounted ahead of its deadline for granting firms anti-money laundering licenses. In April, the regulator appointed Victoria McLoughlin as an interim head of digital assets, but always planned to get someone more permanent that McLoughlin. 

Long will officially take over the position in October. His current position as the NECC including combating economic crime and illicit finance, including immigration crime, modern slavery, human trafficking, drugs, firearms and borders. 

Long also led the UK Financial Intelligence Unit (UKFIU) where he was responsible for receiving, analyzing and dispersing financial intelligence submitted through the Suspicious Activity Reports Regime. Prior to that, Long was a detective in Kent Police where he led over 400 investigations.
