Japanese payment platform Japan Credit Bureau (JCB) announced it is beginning to conduct central bank digital currency (CBDC) tests on its platform.

The test is aimed at allowing credit cards to accommodate CBDC. It will work on three major aspects — a touch payment option, the issuance of CBDC cards, and a simulation of the CBDC environment.

JCB plans to develop a payment framework by the end of 2022 and to begin in store experiments by the end of March 2023.

The BOJ expects the CBDC to launch by 2026.
