Ethereum opened a testnet on April 18. Within two days, it has collected around 20,000 validators, according to Cryptopolitan. The latest Ethereum Topaz testnet marks a milestone of Ethereum network to evolve from the former Sapphire testnet to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) protocol. Compared with the computationally intensive Proof-of-Work (PoW) protocol, the PoS is more energy-efficient.

The latest testnet also applies to the upcoming Ethereum’s second iteration, ETH 2.0, in July, which many have expected to bring a significant economic growth, reported by Cryptoslate. The testnet allows developers to examine the functions and stability before the formal public release of ETH 2.0.
