Algorand, a smart contract blockchain, released a new cryptographic primitive called Pointproofs, to solve the problem of blockchain bloat by saving bandwidth, thus simplifying blockchain validation.

Currently, many blockchain systems use the Merkle proof, which would result in a 3.2-megabyte overhead for 10,000 transactions. However, with Pointproofs’ pairing-based cryptography, the overhead for the same amount would be only 48 bytes, according to Cointelegraph’s interview with Algorand’s head of cryptography, Sergey Gorbunov, on April 28.

Algorand hopes to expand the application of Pointproofs to Ethereum’s stateless client implementation.
